Safety Guide for Baby & Children’s Personal Care Products

3 June 2009 4 Comments

During my baby registry phase, I researched, make that cross-researched, every item and category. When it came to personal care products, packaged in adorable bath baskets, I just wasn’t comfortable not knowing what potential chemicals I would be putting on my baby’s skin. As tempting as those baby bath baskets are, I set out to research personal care products on one of my favorite, trusted sites : cosmeticdatabase.com.

After some digging and no luck finding non-toxic baby personal care products in my local stores, I came across a one page guide created by cosmeticdatabase.com; Safety Guide to Children’s Personal Care Products (pdf). It is a lifesaver! It is split up into sections: tips, ingredients to avoid, and suggested products by category (that would be available in your store).

Every mom MUST print this out for reference when creating your registry or going to the store.  No special protections exist regarding ingredients in personal care products marketed for babies and children. We are responsible for ensuring we use non-toxic or/and the least toxic products out there, especially on newborns. Consider these reasons  for baby’s and children’s increased vulnerability to chemicals:

  • A child’s chemical exposures are greater pound-for-pound than those of an adult.
  • Children are less able than adults to detoxify and excrete chemicals.
  • Children’s developing organ systems are more vulnerable to damage from chemical exposures.
  • Children have more years of future life in which to develop disease triggered by early exposure.

The products I’ve used and loved from the Safety Guide to Children’s Personal Care Products are:

  1. California Baby Shampoo & Body Wash;  subtle, relaxing scent, mild, and leaves no residue
  2. Triple Paste Medicated Ointment for Diaper Rash; works faster than other samples I tried (Aveeno, Palmer’s, Desitin), thick cream that stays on and provides a barrier to skin, and no scent
  3. California Baby SPF 30+ Sunscreen Lotion No Fragrance; I use the stick which applies quickly and easy, great for on-the-go use, has a very subtle product scent if you have a good nose
