I was flipping through a maternity magazine at my doctor’s office when I came across an advertisement for an innovative baby bottle by Adiri, designed with the help of doctors, moms and lactation consultants. The shape of the bottle captured my attention immediately; it looks nothing like your standard bottle, and well, it looks a lot like a breast. It turns out this “feature” not only differentiates this bottle in terms of form but mostly in function. This 100% BPA-free bottle “encourages the same type of open-mouthed latching that is required for breastfeeding, making bottle feeding and breastfeeding more easily interchangeable.” I was warned that the first few weeks of breastfeeding are usually challenging for mom and baby, typically resulting in a bottle being introduced for supplemental purposes. At that point, there’s a high risk your baby may start to refuse the breast, as it requires more work, than a standard bottle with a fast flow.

The Adiri Natural Nurser bottle is engineered so that the milk will only flow when the baby sucks. In standard bottles, the milk immediately starts to flow when you turn the bottle upside down. Additionally, there are three stages of the bottle according to age: 1 Slow Flow (0-3 months), 2 Medium Flow (3-6 months), and 3 Fast Flow (6+ months). The upper portion of the bottle is made from a very soft polycarbonate-free and bisphenol-A free materials. It warms easily from the temperature of the milk, which is then warm and soft to baby’s cheek.

The bottle is also designed to reduce this air ingestion, which can cause your baby to experience infant distress and colic. Adiri’s unique Petal vent system in the bottle’s twist-on cap lets air flow slowly into the bottle as the baby drinks, preventing the nipple from collapsing.

This bottle design won the Medical Design Excellence Award Winner 2008 and the iParenting Media Awards Greatest Products of 2008. To learn more you can watch a well-made demo by Adiri.

The one challenge I had was with milk leaking from the twist cap, which is at the bottom of the bottle. You have to twist the bottle JUST right to ensure no leaks. It happened in one bottle more so than the other. Also, if the bottle cover is not on exactly right, there is a chance it can slightly drip. Additionally, over a period of time, the plastic may slightly discolor. If this bothers you, there are directions that come with the bottle to restore the bottle color.

Overall, the closer a bottle can mimic the breastfeeding in terms of 1) open-mouthed latching, 2) requiring baby to suck for milk to flow, and 3) air ingestion reduction… you are ensuring your baby is getting as much of the breastfeeding benefits, and there are plenty, as possible. And if you are breastfeeding, the Adiri Natural Nurser bottle makes it much easier for your baby whom will seek to latch with an open mouth. This is the ultimate baby bottle and a must-have. One more tip, pack it in your bags for the hospital stay - you just never know.
